Phishing

Phishing-Phishing is a term describing emails that "fish" for personal information. These emails typically imitate businesses such as ebay,

paypal, your bank, etc. They direct the receiver to click on a link to go to a website that requests personal information. This personal information is then used for identity theft purposes.  Phishing emails are usually mass emailed out in the hopes that the "bait" will be taken

by a few.

Protect Yourself

1. Never click on hyperlinks in emails. The text in the e-mail may say it is from a bank or website you go to, however, when you click on the link it does not take you there but to a different website. The actual link can be set as anything but is not visible to the reader. Also never cut and paste the link into your web browser.

-Instead, type in the url to go to the website in your search engine.

     - OR, call the company directly to confirm whether the website is valid.

2. Don't reply to email or pop-up messages that ask for personal or finanical information.

3. Don't email personal information.

4. Be cautious opening  attachments.

5. Review credit card and bank statements as soon as received.

6. Forward spam that is phishing for information to spam@uce.gov and visit FTC's Identity Theft website , www.cosumer.gov/idtheft.
